The mechanism for retrieving the fly line is operated by a lever which that quickly and reliably spools up the previously released line when you lift the lever with your fingers. This way, when playing the fish it has to effectively work against the reel drag at all times and you do not need to release the loose line via your fingers. When reeling in the fish, the taut line is not retrieved in via the lever mechanism, but by hand. The semi-automatic mechanism only serves to spool the loose fly line back onto the reel quickly and easily and with simply pulling the lever with the fingers of the rod hand.
